King of Bollywood

Anupama Chopra’s “King of Bollywood” a sprightly biography of the Indian film superstar Shah Rukh Khan; a concise history of the development and sociology of Bollywood film; and a convincing argument for how India’s growing economy has changed its films, and how Bollywood stands to play a larger role in the world film market.

Launch Date : 11 Oct, 2006
Title :
Shahrukh Khan Still Reading Khan
Author : Mushtaq Shiekh
Price : Rs.3000.00
Publisher : om books international

There's always been a patriarch for every field. He leads, people follow. He takes new paths -- praised if he's successful, derided if he fails. But then somebody has to do the job. Somebody has to invent for the others to reinvent. Somebody has to stand up for our fifty six year old philosophy -- for the people, by the people, to the people. Shah Rukh Khan did just that. He invades areas where no actor has ever been. A clear brand philosophy and a brilliant understanding of mass psyche has been the strength of the SRK product. He is probably the best brand ever churned out by Indian industry. Outrageous and outspoken in his interviews, he played to the masses and boy did he play it right. Then there is the proverbial pinch of salt. With which SRK takes himself. While his work reflects his passion, there has always been that wry black humour that grounds his reality. He has consistently stripped the idealistic glamour from his profession by branding himself a performer. One section of this story deals with the portrait of the artist as an individual, while the other would be an analytical commentary of his body of work and closer look at the Shah Rukh phenomenon through his films. The books argues on several premises including that of visual pleasure and the erotic gaze to explain the strongest points of attraction that a Shah Rukh film holds for the audience. The book would argue that the films under discussion have an underlying theme that binds them the skilled manipulation of visual pleasure and the subversion of the erotic into an acceptable mandate that nevertheless attracts the audience. The book would talk about the emotions and economics of being the Shahrukh Brand. The book would reveal a candid star talking unreservedly on his art and acting. Shahrukh Khan had stepped into the film world as an outsider, a young man bereaved from the loss of his parents, seeking solace, work and passion in an alien world. Today, this outsider is the most familiar member in every fan's household. This book is therefore also the tale of a journey that led from a suburban housing colony in New Delhi into the homes, hearts and minds of innumerable fans all over the world, a journey that transcended boundaries of nations, and the artificial barriers of culture. The book is the story of a survivor, a winner, a never-ending story of success.

SRK to promote TAG Heuer in Don

Shahrukh Khan, the brand ambassador of the luxury watch brand, TAG Heur will be advertising for the latest model of the brand, Monaco 69 in his much anticipated forthcoming film, Don. The brand has unveiled a limited edition of Monaco 69 Shah Rukh Khan watch. In October, when the film releases, only 100 pieces of the watch will be launched. And not surprisingly, all the watches will bear superstar SRK’s signature.

The superstar will not only make it a point to flash and flip it stylishly in the movie. But also thanks to the super cool accessory, he also saves the day with it. Being creative in nature, Shahrukh Khan also been involved with the design of this limited series watch.

Like Hollywood, in-film advertising spells big bucks in Bollywood too and the industry expects to garner more than Rs. 150 crore from in-film branding by the end of this fiscal. Earlier, the entire look of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate has been custom designed by Allen Solly. So far the biggest hit of the year, Krrish, also implants a lot of in-film advertising. Priyanka Chopra happily munching Lay’s chips with her journo friend, Hrithik Roshan wears John Player’s shirts, talks about the benefits of health drink Bourn-vita, and promotes Singapore’s tourist sites extensively.

Santro Xing ad with Vidya

Shahrukh Khan is the brand ambassador for the car brand, Santro. King Khan has done several ads for this car brand. Now he is all set to do another ad, this time with a bollywood actress who is not very well-known. Shahrukh will be doing the ad with actress Vidya Malvade. Vidya is a model turned actress who made her debut in a Bhatt film, Inteha alongside Ashmit Patel.

Vidya Malvade was earlier an air-hostess; soon she was noticed by ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar who added several ads to her portfolio. She later switched on to films and is still optimistic about getting a lucky break in her film career. Vidya will be doing a fun ad with Shahrukh for Santro. The ad features Khan as her husband who is obsessed with the brand name of his car. Vidya plays Khan’s wife in the ad and they both share a few funny moments together. Earlier on Shahrukh Khan featured alongside actress Gayatri Joshi in an ad for Santro, after that Gayatri was noticed and her film career took off. Joshi starred alongside Shahrukh in her first movie itself. Unfortunately the talented actress gave up a career in films post marriage.

This is a big assignment for Vidya Malvade, as she will get more exposure due to Khan’s presence. Vidya was also seen in another film Mashooqa. As for Shahrukh, he is currently awaiting the release of his two big films, Farhan Akhtar’s remake of Don and Karan Johar’s Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna.

Let’s see if some of the SRK magic can rub off on Vidya’s film career too!

SRK to endorse Compaq

Compaq Presario will rope in actor Shah Rukh Khan as brand ambassador endorsing the computer brand on Monday. The campaign is part of the marketing blitzkreig that HP has planned from March 1.

Though the Bollywood Badshah may not have endorsed any technology product earlier, off-the-screen Khan is said to be a tech-savvy person.

Incidentally, he has acted in movies which have made use of the "Blue Screen" effect (especially the song "Suraj Hua Madhyam" from the film "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam") and the more recent "Paheli" wherein Khan had to enact a double role -- one of them being a lovable and romantic ghost.

He was also convincing as a NASA scientist in "Swades" who ultimately gives up his plush job to return to his roots in a remote Indian village and, of course, his love.

Hewlett Packard (HP) has chosen Shah Rukh Khan as he seems the most-loved icon in Indian movies and appeals to the heart of the youth and consumers all over the country.

Kareena, Priyanka and Shahrukh in Pepsi ad

Actress Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra will be seen in yet another Pepsi ad. But this time Shah Rukh will share frame with these two beautiful ladies in Pepsi’s next ad. The trio has just finished shooting for an ad for Pepsi in Madh Island. The ad is being positioned as Pepsi TV.
The ad seems interesting because of combination of Kareena, Priyanka and Shah Rukh, who will be appearing in Farhan Akhtar’s forthcoming remake of Don. As per the sources this ad made at an estimated budget of Rs.3.5 million is done by Shah Rukh's friend Farah Khan and produced by his company Red Chillies Entertainment. Isn’t it double treat for Shah Rukh!

SRK flickers to swamp Kenya

People of the West African nation of Kenya are all set to savour the histrionic skills of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan when a retrospective of his films will be screened here from next week.

The retrospective, being held under the aegis of the Indian High Commission here will feature the actor's 12 critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.

Deewana, Darr, Baazigar, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil Se, Yes Boss, Pardes, Dil To Pagal Hai and Mohabbatein are among the major attractions in the retrospective.

A spokesperson for the Indian High Commission said India was the largest producer of films in the world, churning out nearly 1000 films in more than a dozen languages.

I`d never do film without SRK

Karan Johar, master of mushy romances and one of the most successful directors in Bollywood, says he is now trying to gather the courage to make films in other genres as well.

Karan, 33, already has more than a half dozen hits to his credit and is set to release his next, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, about marriage and other relationships.

"I make films I believe in. Today my strength is emotional drama. I know I lack courage to do a variety of films but I am getting better," Karan said in an interview.

"I am dealing with topics that I might have not thought of earlier." He started in the movie industry when he was 23, producing major hits that starred the biggest names in the industry, including Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.

"I don't run down people who make so-called 'intellectual' films'... but I also know that I am not capable of making these kinds of films. So I choose not to even attempt them," he said.

"If that makes me limited, then maybe I am ... I've never claimed to be an all-round filmmaker." All of his films have featured Shah Rukh Khan. The two are close friends as well, and Karan said he couldn't imagine doing a film without SRK. "I would never want to go on a film set, where he's not there. Right now, I can't think about it and I hope I don't have to. He's a part of me and he gives me a lot of strength, emotionally and professionally."

Shah Rukh set to woo Kenya

People of the west African nation of Kenya are all set to savour the histrionic skills of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan when a retrospective of his films will be held here from next week.

The retrospective, being held under the aegis of the Indian High Commission in Kenya, will feature the actor's 12 critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.

"The entertainment sector of India directly and indirectly employs over seven million people and earns foreign exchange worth $1.6 billion per year. More than 43 million Indians go to see films every day on an average," he said.

"The retrospective is expected to further promote friendship between the peoples of India and Kenya," he said.

Shah Rukh says yes to Ramu

Shah Rukh Khan and Ram Gopal Varma will finally come together for a film. And it's definitely not going to be Ram Gopal Varma Ka Sholay.

The filmmaker met Shah Rukh Khan recently on the sets of Karan Johar's film to discuss the project. Varma, who was reluctant to divulge any details, revealed, "We are planning to do a film together, but it is not going to be Sholay."

Varma and Shah Rukh Khan have in fact, been talking to each other about doing a film together for a while now, but the two never really got down to doing so.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that Varma has thought of Shah Rukh for his film. The director wanted him to play Gabbar in his Sholay. And years ago, he also had SRK in mind for his film, Company.

When contacted, Shah Rukh told us, "Ramu and I have been wanting to work together for a long time. Now it's working out."

Shah Rukh, incidentally, is also acting in Shimit Amin's film. The latter has worked as Varma's assistant and has directed Ab Tak Chhappan for him.

Showcase INDIA!

Aishwarya Rai & Shahrukh Khan to showcase India.

Aishwarya Rai and Shahrukh Khan will invite the world to be a part of the 2010 commonwealth games at Delhi. Both Aishwarya and Shahrukh Khan would be part of an 11-minute musical extravaganza presented at the closing ceremony of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006 on March 26.

A presentation of the plan for the cultural show was made before chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday. The presentation will focus on highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Delhi and the entire country and what awaits delegates, participants and tourists at the 2010 Games in Delhi.

The Lyrics for the theme song has been penned by the eminent lyricist Gulzar and its music has been composed by the composer trio of Shankar, Ehsan and Loy. The theme song, “Dilli chalein, chalna hai, chal chal, chalna hai.” is in keeping with the theme for the 2010 Games, “new frontiers and new friendships.”

India would be organising the Commonwealth Games for the first time and Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan are surely among the faces of the modern resurgent India.

SRK to endorse talcum powder

Shahrukh Khan will soon be seen in a TV commercial for a talcum powder brand. Shahrukh has finished shooting for the commercial directed by Prahlad Kakkar.

Says Prahlad Kakkar, director of the ad film, “It’s a very middle-class product and it got Shah Rukh Khan in it. It’s a day in his life with talcum powder and how he feels cool and efficient with it.”

Shahrukh Khan was only recently seen in a Lux commercial bathing in a tub full of roses, surrounded by actresses from yesteryear and the present. Now he could be seen pampering himself with talcum powder.

The commercial shows Shahrukh Khan looking out for his heroine and chasing the bad guys. The actor is then seen to be caressing himself in the bathroom with talcum powder telling us how he feels cool and efficient with its use.

Shahrukh Khan has done the stunts himself in the commercial. The actor is back doing action sequences after a long layoff. His back ailment prevented him from performing his own stunts until recently but now Shahrukh seems to have perfectly recovered and is back in shape.
